What types of bronzer are there and how do you choose?
There are several types of bronzer, each offering a different finish and intensity:
- Powder bronzer: The most classic type. Easy to dose and blend, especially for normal, combination or oily skin. Perfect over powder and foundation.
- Cream bronzer: Has a creamy texture that melts into the skin, giving a more natural, skin-like result. Good for dry or normal skin and for those who love a dewy base.
- Liquid bronzer: Lightweight and often very blendable. Can be mixed with foundation or applied over the skin for a more “no makeup makeup” look.
When choosing the right bronzer, consider:
- Skin tone: Choose a bronzer that is about 1–2 shades darker than your own skin tone. If it's too dark, it can look muddy.
- Undertone: If you have cool skin, neutral to slightly cool bronzers often work best. If you have warm skin, golden or slightly warm bronzers are beautiful.
- Finish: Matte bronzer is ideal for everyday use or oily skin, and when you want to mimic natural shadows. Bronzer with shimmer gives an extra glow and is perfect for a more glowy, sun-kissed look.
How do you apply bronzer?
Bronzer is typically applied after foundation and powder (for powder bronzer) or directly on the skin/liquid base (for cream and liquid).
A simple rule of thumb is to apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit the face:
- Along the hairline/forehead
- On the upper part of the cheekbones
- Lightly on the bridge of the nose
- Possibly a little on the jawline to complete the look
Think in a soft “3-shape” motion on each side of the face: from forehead, down over the cheek and out towards the jaw. Use a fluffy bronzer brush for powder bronzer and a brush, sponge or fingers for cream/liquid. Build the color gradually to achieve an even, natural sun-kissed glow without harsh lines.
