What is lip stain?
Lip stain is a lip color that “stains” the lips, providing a more long-lasting tint than classic lipstick or lip gloss. Instead of sitting as a thick layer on top of the lips, it lightly penetrates the surface, leaving a colored veil that stays put even when shine and any moisture have faded. The result is a more natural, “blotted” look, where the lips appear lightly colored and fresh, without feeling like you have a lot of product on.
Lip stain is ideal if you want minimal maintenance, color that can last through everyday life, work, drinks, and appointments, and a look that doesn't feel sticky or heavy.
How to use lip stain?
For the best results with lip stain, lip preparation and application are important:
- Start with clean, dry lips. If necessary, gently exfoliate with a mild scrub or a moisturizing balm that is then blotted off, so the lips are smooth.
- Apply a thin layer of lip stain to the lips.
- Use the applicator directly or dab the product in with your fingertip for an even more natural and blended look.
- Allow the product to dry for a moment so the color can set.
- If you want more intensity, you can build up the color with another layer.
- Optionally, finish with a clear lip balm or gloss on top if you want to add moisture or shine without losing the color underneath.
Lip stain is ideal on its own for a natural look, but can also be used as a base under other lip products to ensure you still have color on your lips even when the rest has worn off.
