Highlighter for your makeup routine
Highlighter is the product that gives the skin a glow and makes the face look fresh and awake. While bronzer adds warmth and blush adds color, highlighter is used to accentuate the highest points of the face and reflect light, making the skin look more glowy and vibrant. A touch of highlighter can elevate your entire base and create a more dimensional makeup look.
What types of highlighter are there?
There are several types of highlighter, each offering different intensity and finish:
- Powder highlighter
The classic type, which is easy to control and build up. Perfect for normal, combination, or oily skin, and ideal over powder and foundation. - Cream highlighter
Has a creamy, soft texture that melts into the skin, providing a more natural, “dewy” glow. Good for normal to dry skin or for those who love a more skin-like finish. - Liquid highlighter
Light and often very glowy. Can be used alone, over makeup, or mixed into foundation or day cream for an all-over glow.
When choosing a highlighter, consider your skin tone and shade:
- Light skin tones: champagne, mother-of-pearl, and light rose tones.
- Medium skin tones: golden, peachy, and warm champagne colors.
- Darker skin tones: warm gold, bronze, and copper shades.
How to apply highlighter?
Highlighter is applied to the areas where light naturally hits the face, to create dimension and glow:
- On the top of the cheekbones
- On the bridge of the nose (possibly only the center for a more natural look)
- On the cupid's bow above the upper lip
- In the center of the chin
- Perhaps a little on the brow bone and in the inner corner of the eye to open up the gaze
For powder highlighter, use a small, fluffy brush and light strokes. For cream and liquid highlighter, you can use your fingers, a brush, or a sponge and dab the product into the skin. Always start with a little and build up until you achieve the amount of glow that suits you.
